EuroSurg is an European medical students and surgeons network who collaborate together to run multicentre international studies.

A meeting of students interested in developing an international student research network was convened at the European Society of Coloproctology (ESCP) annual meeting in September 2015. Having discussed the student-driven research model developed by STARSurg (find more here: https://starsurg.org/), EuroSurg Collaborative was launched.

Our first collaborative student-led study explored the association between obesity and complications following major abdominal surgery. Medical students and trainees from seven European countries took part: Italy, The Netherlands, Czech Republic, United Kingdom, Ireland, Spain and Turkey. Its main findings were published in Colorectal Disease:

EuroSurg Collaborative. Body mass index and complications following major gastrointestinal surgery: a prospective, international cohort study and meta-analysis. Colorectal Dis. 2018 Aug;20(8):O215-O225. doi: 10.1111/codi.14292.

Our second study – IMAGINE (Ileus Management International) ran in 2018 and it was recently published in the British Journal of Surgery. Medical students and trainees from more than 25 contries from Europe, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand joined and contributed to the successfull delivery of the study.

EuroSurg offers a great opportunity for medical students to get involved in surgical research! We strongly believe that knowledge and experience in research is essential for future doctors and surgeons. We adopt a collaborative authorship model, meaning all our collaborators are PubMed citable co-authors.
